Goa SB117-3039r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3039 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $5,875. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. 12 Xerafins, 1840. NGC AU Details--Mount Removed. VERY RARE final type and second to last year of hammered gold coinage issued in Portuguese India. Of finer style and manufacture than it predecessors with the full design rendered on both obverse and reverse. Evidence of multiple strikes with a touch of ghosting behind reverse cross. Formerly pinch mounted at 12 o'clock with small marks showing where the apparatus was removed but otherwise not overly cleaned or polished. Seldom offered and difficult to locate." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By 1840, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This scarce type, which is not catalogued above VF, is noted for 1840-41. In 1871, a new series of milled coinage, struck by the British for the Portuguese, was introduced.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.87 g, gold, 18 mm diameter.
