Western India in 1942, including Diu

This specimen was lot 1316 in Steve Album sale 16 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "DIU: Maria I, 1777-1816, AR 300 reis, 1806, EF." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By 1806, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This silver 300 réis was accompanied by a silver 150 réis and 600 réis (rupee).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.8 g, silver, 17 mm diameter; this specimen 3.72 g.

Catalog reference: KM-51, Gomes-34.01.
