Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 56447
SB823-56447r.jpg

This specimen was lot 56447 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Tanga, ND (1826-34). Goa Mint. PCGS FINE-15." By 1826, Portuguese holdings in India were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. The tanga, formerly a silver coin, had by the reign of Miguel I become a copper coin worth 1/16 rupia instead of 1/10 rupia. After 1870, the British controlled mints of Bombay and Calcutta provided modern milled coinage.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-251.
