from the Stack's Bowers 2017 ANA sale, lot 22749
Mexico SB817-22749r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22749 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1813/2-TH. NGC AU-50. SCARCE assayer's letters for this year. Nice strike with attractive dark toning." This specimen is one of a series minted 1812-21 in Mexico City during the reign of Ferdinand VII. It uses the "standard bust" of Ferdinand. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango. The date is scarce. Assayer TH is recorded for 1804-13.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, .896 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-93.
