Aureo sale 261, lot 527

This Spanish equivalent of the pistole was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1788-1808. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1729. This specimen was lot 527 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €201 (about US$322 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1808. Carlos IV. Madrid. AI. 2 escudos. MBC-/MBC. (Charles IV, 1788-1808, two escudos of 1808, Madrid mint, about very fine.)"

Assayers FA and AI are noted for 1808.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14304, Cal. 353, KM 435.1, Fr-297.
