Steve Album sale 55, lot 3102

This specimen was lot 3102 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 10 hryven, 2000, Flora and Fauna Series – Freshwater Crab, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, with COA of issue, Proof." Potamon is a genus of freshwater crabs containing twenty species, of which Potamon tauricum is not mentioned. It is likely the designers intended to feature Potamon ibericum, the Iberian freshwater crab, which ranges from Greece to the Caspian Sea, including the Ukraine. This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 2000, including KM 108, KM 109, KM 119, KM 120, KM 121 (shown here), KM 122 and KM 123, all struck to the same module. The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovantsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven.

Recorded mintage: 5,000, from the Kyiv mint.

Specifications: 33.63 g, 0.925 fine silver, 38.61 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-121.
