Ukraine 2001 10 hryven KM-113
This specimen was lot 3105 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 10 hryven, 2001, Heroes of Cossack Age Series – Ivan Mazepa, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, Proof." Ivan Mazepa (1639-1709) was hetman of the united Cossacks 1687-1709 and led the recovery from the strife of the divided Left Bank Ukraine, Right Bank Ukraine and Zaporozh Cossacks. When the Great Northern War broke out in 1700, he was forced to choose between the Swedes and the Russians, neither of whom had any regard for Cossack autonomy. In the end, he switched sides to support Charles XII of Sweden, and was forced into exile as a result while the Ukraine was devastated. This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 2001, including KM 113 (shown here), KM 114, KM 115, KM 130, KM 131, KM 141, KM 142, KM 143 and KM 165, all except KM 143 struck to the same module. The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovantsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven.
