Sincona sale 85, lot 1292

This specimen was lot 1292 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 15,000 CHF (about US$20,199 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Reza Shah, 1304-1320 SH (1925-1941). 500 Dinars 1304 SH (1925 AD), Tehran Mint. Lion & Sun type. Rayej legend. Very rare. NGC UNC Details. Cleaned. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 321. From Baldwin's, London, August 1980, lot 695.

The minting of this coin took place in the same month that the Constitutional Congress confirmed Reza Shah as the next King of Iran (24th, month of Azar, 1304).The official mintage of this first type of 500 Dinars 1304 SH was, according to a contemporary report from Mr. Arthur Chester Millspaugh, 10,000 pieces. However, this coin was never put into circulation and is the rarest coin of the Pahlavi Dynasty. There are less than 7 to 8 known pieces. (We thank Mr. Abdolaziz Haghsefat, Tehran, for this information.)"

After Reza Pahlavi overthrew the Qajars and seized the throne for himself, he continued the old denominations for several years, substituting his name and adopting a new dating system. The SH calendar is a solar version of the Hegira calendar which, being lunar based, starts on a different date each year.

Recorded mintage: 10,000.

Specification: 2.30 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 1094.
