Iran SH1305 5 pahlavi
This specimen was lot 1265 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 20,000 CHF (about US$26,932 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"IRAN, Reza Shah, 1304-1320 SH (1925-1941). 5 Pahlavi 1305 SH (1926 AD), Tehran Mint. Extremely rare. Only 271 pieces struck. NGC MS67. Cabinet piece. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 294. Bought from J. W. Garrett Collection, Bowers, New York, 1984. Finest certified by NGC. This coin has a reported mintage of 271 pieces, but it is an extremely rare issue with few known examples."
After Reza Pahlavi overthrew the Qajars and seized the throne for himself, he continued the old denominations for several years, substituting his name and adopting a new dating system. The SH calendar is a solar version of the Hegira calendar which, being lunar based, starts on a different date each year. This is one of the first of the new coinage. The pahlavi was lated increased in weight to match the British sovereign.
