Sincona sale 85, lot 1289

This specimen was lot 1289 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$303 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Reza Shah, 1304-1320 SH (1925-1941). 1000 Dinars 1304 SH (1925 AD), Tehran Mint. Lion & Sun type. Rayej legend. NGC MS63. Magnificent condition. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 322. Bought from S. Cordry, San Diego, 1983. Tied with one other for finest certified by NGC."

After Reza Pahlavi overthrew the Qajars and seized the throne for himself, he continued the old denominations for several years, substituting his name and adopting a new dating system. The SH calendar is a solar version of the Hegira calendar which, being lunar based, starts on a different date each year. This type was also struck in SH 1305.
