Sincona sale 85, lot 1291

This specimen was lot 1291 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$337 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Reza Shah, 1304-1320 SH (1925-1941). 1000 Dinars 1306 SH (1927 AD), Tehran Mint. Lion & Sun type. Reza Shah legend. NGC MS65. Cabinet piece. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 315. Tied with one other for finest certified by NGC."

After Reza Pahlavi overthrew the Qajars and seized the throne for himself, he continued the old denominations for several years, substituting his name and adopting a new dating system. The SH calendar is a solar version of the Hegira calendar which, being lunar based, starts on a different date each year. This type was struck SH 1305-1306 along with a 1000 dinars with a bust obverse (KM 1103).

Recorded mintage: 3,130,000 (including 1306/5 overdate and KM 1103).

Specification: 4.60 g, 0.900 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.
