This specimen was lot 34195 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1803-LM IJ. Lima Mint. Charles IV. PCGS MS-62. The single finest certified of the date on either the NGC or PCGS population reports. This lovely example offers a pleasing appearance with much originality. Attractive light gray tone displaying richer coloration near the edges with an iridescent sheen that adds to its eye appeal and desirability. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Purchased privately from Louis Collins." This specimen is one of a series struck 1791-1808 during the reign of Charles IV (1788-1808). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted finding about one-fourth as many Peruvian four reales of Charles IV as that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is scarce.
