Aureo sale 238, lot 175

This specimen was lot 175 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 550 euro (about US$872 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1803. Lima. JP. 8 reales. Leves impurezas. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Muy escasa y más así. EBC+. (eight reales of 1803, planchet impurities, some luster, choice extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1791-1808 for Charles IV and is probably the most common colonial coin of Peru. Assayer JP is recorded for 1803-23 and only the overdate is recorded for 1803. Assayer IJ is also known for 1803.

Recorded mintage: 3,875,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
