Aureo sale 238, lot 176

This specimen was lot 176 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 140 euro (about US$222 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1804. Lima. JP. 8 reales. MBC/MBC+. (eight reales of 1804, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1791-1808 for Charles IV and is probably the most common colonial coin of Peru. Assayer JP is recorded for 1803-23.

Recorded mintage: 3,979,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
