This specimen was lot 1349 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 17049, Rennes. 2e type. 4e réformation. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis, avec écu de France rond au centre. Belle patine. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver half écu of the eight "L's" of 1704, Rennes mint, second type, fourth reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's", cantonned with four lilies, with the round arms of France at the center. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"
Shown is a 1704-9 demi-écu aux 8 L of the Rennes mint, Note traces of an undertype; this coin nearly always comes struck over an earlier half écu, Droulers[2] notes that all known specimens from this mint are overstruck. The bulk were struck 1704-05 but a few are known dated as late as 1709. Some of this date (not this one) were struck using obverse dies leftover from the previous bust (Dr/4 no. 629).
Recorded mintage: unknown, all rf[2], somewhat scarce.
Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, 33-36 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 13,57 g.
