Ponterio sale 155, lot 6244

This specimen was lot 6244 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $230. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Culiacan. 8 Reales, 1879-JD. Straight '9' in date. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED." The Culiacan mint struck eight reales 1846-97 and this date is common. Other mints for 1879 include Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Hermosillo, Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
