France SB816-22309r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22309 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Franc, 1830-W. Lille Mint. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. Sharply struck with a high degree of luster. Lightly toned and very attractive." This dime-sized coin was struck at Paris under the régime of king Charles X (1824-30), the year he was overthrown. Some were struck after his abdication. It is a rather available date of a type struck 1825-30. All half francs of this reign are of this type, which is common. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[1] notes 54 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is priced about double the common date.

Recorded mintage: 130,859[1].

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, plain edge. Designed by Auguste-François Michaut, 1786-1879.
