Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features a bust of Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons. This type was struck 1972 and 1976-81 at the Franklin mint. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.

Recorded mintage: 5,252 specimens for sets plus 3,244 proofs.

Specification: 0.95 g, aluminum, 20.3 mm diameter.
