This specimen was lot 30376 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $499.38. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Escudo 1855-MJ, AU55 NGC. Well-struck details with soft original toning. The mintmaster's initials, MJ, are quite clear on this example. This variety is listed as LM/J in the SCWC. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was struck 1852-56 and is seldom seen, despite the modest catalog value.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold.
Catalog reference: KM 114, Fr-35.
