Sincona sale 43, lot 2997
Künker sale 335, lot 4669

The first specimen was lot 2997 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 450 CHF (aboout US$537 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TSCHECHIEN | Böhmen, Friedrich V. von der Pfalz (Winterkönig), 1619-1622 Kipper-24 Kreuzer 1620. Prag. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast vorzüglich. Leichte Prägeschwächen. (kingdom of Bohemia, Frederick V of the Palatinate, the "Winter King", 1619-22, kipper 24 kreuzer of 1620, Prague mint. Rare in this condition, About extremely fine, Slightly weakly struck.)"

The second specimen was lot 4669 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,570 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH. Friedrich von der Pfalz (der Winterkönig), 1619-1621. Kipper-24 Kreuzer 1620, Joachimstal. Münzmeister Centurio Lengefelder. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Frederick of the Palatinate, the "Winter King", 1619-21, kipper 24 kreuzer of 1620, Joachimsthal mint. Rare in this condition, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Kipper 24 kreuzer were struck at Kuttenberg, Prague and Joachimsthal for the Protestant Frederick V. Altho nominally a one-third thaler, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 48, 30, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today. Among the 24 kreuzer for 1620 are KM-228 (Joachimsthal); -238 (Kuttenberg); -239 (Joachimsthal); -242 (Joachimsthal); -227 (Kuttenberg); -241 (Kuttenberg); -243 (Kuttenberg); -226 (Prague); -237 (Prague mint, shown here); -240 (Prague).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 7.59 g, the second specimen 7.62 g.

Catalog reference: Dietiker 580. Herinek 29, KM 237; the second specimen Dietiker 583; Halacka 682.
