Künker sale 400, lot 478

This specimen was lot 478 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €16,000 (about US$20,757 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KAISERTUM, Napoléon III, 1852-1870. 5 Francs 1859, A, Paris. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 63 (5784001-002). Von größter Seltenheit in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, fast Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Jean Vinchon Numismatique, Monte-Carlo April 1976, Nr. 420. Die 5 Francs-Stücke von 1859 wurden in nur geringer Stückzahl ausgegeben und gelangten direkt in den Zahlungsverkehr. Dadurch sind heute nur sehr wenige Stücke in guter Erhaltung bekannt. In fast Stempelglanz wie dieses Exemplar ist dieser Münztyp extrem selten anzutreffen. (empire of France, Napoleon III, 1852-70, five francs of 1859, Paris mint. Graded NGC MS63. Extremely rare in this quality, choice example, superb patina, about uncirculated. The 5 franc pieces from 1859 were only issued in small numbers and went directly into circulation. As a result, very few pieces in good condition are known today. This coin type is extremely rare to find in this quality.)"

The catalog[2] notes that this type comprises 11 date and mintmark combinations, some, like this one, very rare.

Recorded mintage: 3,365 plus 5,741,592 gold five francs.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Louis Charles Bouvet, 1802-1887.
