Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 180

This specimen was lot 180 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,376 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1648. Felipe IV. Amberes. Doble ducatón. Leves rayitas, pero bella. Ex Áureo 27/02/2002, nº 460. Rara y más así. EBC-. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, double ducaton of 1648, Antwerp mint. Light scratches, but still nice. Rare, about extremely fine.)"

The single ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The double ducaton shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1636-62 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at the Maastricht mint 1636-73. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 64.96 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 63,30 g.

Catalog reference: KM 75.1, Vti. 1265, Vanhoudt 642.AN P2, Dav-4453.
