from Stack's Bowers 2016 ANA sale, part of lot 21046
India SB816-21046j.jpg

The first specimen was lot 29875 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "British India. Victoria 1/2 Anna 1877-(B) MS62 Brown NGC, Bombay mint. Bust type B - Type II reverse. An important key date issue in the Victoria 1/2 Anna series with sharp definition on the highpoints and traces of original red color within portions of the protected areas. Very rarely found in Mint State and accordingly, the only example of the issue that NGC has certified at that tier." The second specimen was part of lot 21046 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), which sold for $5,640. The catalog description[2] noted, "INDIA. Victoria. Eight Piece Restrike Proof Set, 1877. NGC PROOF-64 & PROOF-65. KM-483, 484, 486, 487, 488, 490, 491 & 492. RARE AS A SET. A fabulous nicely matched restrike set with all of the copper pieces grading full RED and with light clear toning on the silver pieces. From smallest to largest denomination, grades are as follows: PROOF-65 RD, PROOF-65 RD, PROOF-64 RD, PROOF-64 RD, PROOF-65, PROOF-64, PROOF-65 and PROOF-64. Totally free of spots or other impairments. These are some of the nicest examples available anywhere on the planet. We expect keen interest from bidders attempting to acquire this rarely offered set." Restrikes in gold and silver exist for this date. Additional proofs were struck 1878, 1884 and 1890-93 but this is the only date struck for circulation.

Recorded mintage: 3,454,000 plus 3,564,000 from Calcutta.

Specification: copper.
