SB124-54130 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 54130 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/2 Anna, 1877-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. NGC PROOF-63 Brown. A type that is oft encountered as restrike, being heavily lacquered and pitted with die rust; this example is notably free of those faults and offers an original specimen. The strike is complete, with a wonderful shimmering brilliance and a generally sharp eye appeal throughout. An example that will sure excite those collectors of Indian proofs of an older vintage than what is normally encountered." Restrikes in gold and silver exist for this date. Additional proofs were struck 1878, 1884 and 1890-93 but this is the only date struck for circulation.

Recorded mintage: 3,584,000 (all varieties) plus restrikes plus 3,454,000 from Bombay.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-487; S&W-6.459.
