Spain 1836-B PS 80 reales

Aureo sale 233, lot 551

The first specimen was lot 719 in Soler y Llach's winter sale (Barcelona, January 2010). The second specimen was lot 551 in Aureo y Calicó sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 1,300 euros (about US$2,164 including buyer's fee). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"1836. Barcelona. PS. 80 reales. Anv.: ISABEL 2A POR LA GRACIA DE DIOS. Levísimos golpecitos. Bella. Brillo original. Muy rara. EBC-/EBC. (Eight reales of 1836, Barcelona mint; obverse: Isabel II, by the grace of God. Tiny nicks, nice original luster, very rare, about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck for Spain at Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1834-36. The Barcelona issue shown here is much rarer than the Madrid and Seville products. The superseding type of 1837-49 is much more available. It is the same size as the old two escudos struck in Ferdinand's time.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.

Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
