Aureo sale 232, lot 408

This specimen was lot 408 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, Spain, March 2011), where it sold for 316 euros (about US$521 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1838. Barcelona. PS. 80 reales. Anv.: ...CONSTITUCION. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Escasa. EBC/EBC+. (Eighty reales of 1838 Barcelona mint, with "CONSTITUCION" on the obverse. Nice, some mint luster, scarce, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck at Barcelona 1837-38 only. The regular eighty reales had the obverse legend abbreviated to "CONST" and was issued from Barcelona, Seville and Madrid 1837-49. It is the same size as the old two escudos struck in Ferdinand's time.

Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
