This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type struck 1763-71. This specimen was lot 3478 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $13,800. The catalog description[1] noted,
"1765 JM 4 escudos. Lima mint. EF-45 (NGC). Bust of Carlos III to right, legends around, date below/crowned arms, legends around. Medium gold with deep orange highlights at the rims, long curved flaw from top of head to chin but apparently as made. Scattered marks consistent with the level of wear, some lustre remains on reverse. A very rare issue of the short lived 'rat nose' bust, missing from most collections in any condition.
