This specimen was lot 2137 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "Highly desirable 'Rat Nose' 4 Escudos, PERU. 4 Escudos, 1768-LM JM. Lima Mint. Charles III. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. The only certified example of the date on the NGC population report. This VERY RARE and immensely popular issue exhibits a bold strike with well-formed devices and even wear. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued. Despite its shortcoming this handsome example is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. From the Pat Johnson Collection." Gold coins from Lima are much scarcer than issues from the Colombian mints. Assayer JM is recorded for 1751-72. The "rat nose" bust of the king was used 1763-65 and 1768-71 with the bust slightly modified in 1768 to make the king look older. This is the younger bust.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-27b; KM-71.1; Cal-1751, Cayón-12597.
