Mexico 1765-Mo MF 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 3148 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $52,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "1765 MF 4 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous medium gold with rich orange highlights. A simply exceptional specimen of this rare type. Choice eye appeal, somewhat soft at base of shield and showing a minor abrasion in that area, some trivial hairlines. Gerber lacked this type on a 4 escudos, while Norweb owned a single 1764-dated piece that was not as nice as this one. A key type in an advanced collection of 4 escudos, a well-provenanced example that may be among the best available to collectors. John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. This very rare type was struck 1762-71 and is the second of three busts of Charles III.
