"1760 MM 4 escudos. Mexico City mint. EF-40 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold with some toning highlights and good even eye appeal. A very rare type on this denomination, this bust missing from Gerber and the Iovino sale of 2000 and represented by a similar but less boldly struck coin in Norweb. An important rarity that has not been sold publicly since 1935. From J.C. Morgenthau and Co. (Wayte Raymond)'s sale of the Waldo C. Newcomer collection, February 1935, Lot 392 (plated, 'Ex. fine and rare,' $105); John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
This very rare type was struck 1760-61 and is the first of three busts of Charles III. It is the rarest colonial four escudos after the 1747 "imaginary bust."
