This specimen was lot 3143 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "1760 MM 1 escudo. Mexico City mint. VF-35 (NGC). Types as above. Medium yellow gold with some highlights. An attractive example of this very rare issue. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type, the first showing the bust of Charles III, was struck 1760-61 only. It is the rarest of the escudos featuring king Charles III.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold, .100 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 3.34 grams, 17.90 mm diameter.
