Colombia 1760-PN J escudo
The first specimen was lot 40006 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1760-J Escudo. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-58 (PCGS). Lively and lustrous light yellow gold with undimmed reflectivity at the peripheries. Choice in appearance and showing only the typical handling associated with the grade. An important issue, the first in the name of Carlos III though depicting the bust of Ferdinand VI. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Ponterio and Wyatt, July 1981." The second specimen was lot 933 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[2] noted, "COLOMBIA, Popayán, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles III (bust of Ferdinand VI), 1760 J, NGC AU details / cleaned, ex-Becerra. Sharp details for the grade, with light wear and marks and surface granularity. Pedigreed to the Becerra Collection (stated on label)." This type is listed from Popayán for 1760, 1762, 1767 and 1769. The Popayán mint never adopted the "rat nose" bust of Charles III, retained the bust of his deceased brother Ferdinand.
