This specimen was lot 1476 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $575. The catalog description[1] noted, "1762 1 escudo. Popayán mint. EF-45 (NGC). Types as above. Uniform medium gold, scattered signs of handling and even wear. From B. Max Mehl's sale of the Thomas W. Voetter Collection, January 1943, Lot 356." This type was struck at Popayán 1760, 1762, 1767 and 1769. Contemporary one escudos from Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) used the "rat-nose" bust of Charles III. Colombian gold from this period, tho scarce, is much more available than Mexican or Peruvian issues. The fineness was lowered to .901 in 1772.
