Peru 1762-L JM escudo
This specimen was lot 1267 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $13,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles III, 1762/51 JM, first bust, extremely rare, NGC VF 35, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Sellschopp, ex-Almenara, KM plate. Bold strike with full rims, choice contrast from red toning and light sediment, trace of natural flaw to rim behind head, the strange and possibly unique overdate actually quite clear and apparently overlooked till now (missing in all references and in the Sellschopp catalog, despite being the Plate Coin in KM). Pedigreed to the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 283) and to the Almenara Collection, Plate Coin in KM's Standard Catalogs." This type was struck 1761-62 and is very rare. It was the first escudo struck in Peru for Charles III.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold.
