This specimen was lot 50058 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $435. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 2 Escudos, 1762-PN J. PCGS Genuine--Rim Damage, VF Details Secure Holder." The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino) concentrated on minting gold, to the near exclusion of silver which predominated at the other colonial mints. While this makes Colombian colonial silver coins expensive, Colombian colonial gold is (comparatively) reasonable and this type is fairly common. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine. While the Popayán mint used the old bust of king Ferdinand in the 1760's, Bogotá used the "rat-nose" bust of Charles III.
