Peru 1765-L JM 8 reales
This specimen was lot 1159 in Goldberg sale 46 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it sold for $6,250. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. 8 Reales, 1765-JM (Lima). Charles III. Pillar series. Lovely iridescent toning. Rarely are examples seen that excel in so many ways as does this lovely coin. NGC graded MS-64. Provenance: Ex Irving Goodman Collection." This type was struck 1760-72; Gilboy lists this date as "scarce." Lima pillar dollars of this period come with one dot or two dots, referring to the dots over the mintmarks; the specimen shown is a "two dot" variety.
