This specimen was lot 230 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,100 € (about US$1,437 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1731. Felipe V. Madrid. JF. 2 escudos. Mint between J and F. Small assayers. Nice. Some of its original luster. Rare. EBC-/EBC [extremely fine]. Ex Aureo 10/22/1998, no. 2326. Ex Isabel de Trastamara Collection 05/27/2014, no. 678. Ex A. F. Maldonado Collection 01/23/2020, no. 63." This type was struck 1730-34. It marks the first appearance of a royal portrait on a gold coin since the days of Ferdinand and Isabella. This portrait was used at Seville until 1738 and at Mexico City until 1746. Assayer F and JF are recorded for 1731. A variety exists with the assayer and mintmark arranged "M JF".
