Aureo sale 233, lot 96
from the Mountain Groan collection
Spain 1850Seg decima rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen shown was lot 96 in Aureo y Calicó sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 140 euros (about US$233 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1850. Segovia. 1 décima de real. Precioso color. S/C-. (One tenth real of 1850, Segovia mint. Beautiful color, about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in Segovia 1850-53. In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before. The coinage would be reformed a second time in 1866.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: copper, 3.57-4.14 g, 19 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16587, KM 590, Cal. 581.
