SB1123-73329r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73329 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1648/7-T. Nantes Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS EF-40. Olive-gray in color and with only a moderate degree of handling across the high points, this crown presents charming originality, though the noted overdate is difficult to confirm." The specimen shown is a écu à la mèche longue struck at Nantes during the reign of Louis XIV. It is a fairly common date. The type was issued in large numbers 1646-54.

Recorded mintage: 273,900.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 441, Dr/2 № 298, Dav-3799; KM-155.16; Dupl-1469; Gad-202.
