This specimen was lot 1004 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$952 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 1/4 Dukat 1780, Karlsburg. Für Siebenbürgen. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Hungary, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, quarter ducat of 1780, Karlsburg mint, for Transylvania. Very rare, Extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1768, 1772, 1776-80. The crudity of the queen's bust, which does not match a contemporary half ducat, ducat or double ducat, makes this example look like a counterfeit. In addition, the mintmaster's initials are missing.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.88 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 0.87 g.
