Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72314
SB1021-72314r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72314 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Real, 1845-M CL. Madrid Mint. Isabel II. NGC MS-64. "De Vellon" coinage. Mostly argent and extremely brilliant, this near-Gem minor certainly dazzles and presents quality that is SCARCELY encountered for the type." This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1837-49. The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, set twenty reales = one peso instead of the traditional eight.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, .039 troy oz ASW (not 3.38 g as stated in the SCWC), 14.2-14.6 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-518.1, Cayón-16803.
