Catalonia 1845 6 cuartos
This specimen was lot 72329 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Catalonia. 6 Quartos, 1845. Barcelona Mint. Isabel II. NGC AU-58. Variety with 5-petalled flowers. A very minor planchet flaw is noted on the shield side, but this barely handled specimen otherwise offers great appeal for a type not often encountered so pleasing." This copper coin was issued from Barcelona for use there and in Catalonia. It was struck 1836-48 and accompanied by a copper three quartos. In the local currency, six quartos = 1/20 peso. This coin is not common but priced rather low in the SCWC. The last local Catalan issue is a rare six quartos dated 1848.
