Spain 1845-Ja 8 maravedis
The specimen shown was lot 88 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 15 euros (about US$25 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1845. Jubia. 8 maravedís. MBC-/MBC (Eight maravedis of 1845, Jubia mint, very fine.)"
The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. The maravedi was worth 1/34 of a real; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Jubia, Segovia and Barcelona 1837-50 and was accompanied by copper one, two and four maravedis. The type is not scarce, tho Jubia issues are less common than Segovia products.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
