Spain 1845-S RD 80 reales

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This type was struck at Barcelona, Madrid and Seville (shown here) 1837-49 in sufficient numbers that it is one of the more common Spanish gold coins of the period. It is the same size as the old two escudos struck in Ferdinand's time.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarcer than Barcelona or Madrid.

Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
