Catalonia 1846 6 cuartos
The first specimen was lot 970 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $484. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Reino de España. Isabel II. 1833-1868. CU 6 Quartos. Provincial issue for Cataluña. Dated 1846. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65 BN. Moderate brown patina with a lot of red luster peeking through. Highest ever graded for the date and type." This copper coin was issued from Barcelona for use there and in Catalonia. It was struck 1836-48 and accompanied by a copper three quartos. In the local currency, six quartos = 1/20 peso. This coin is not common but priced rather low in the SCWC. The last local Catalan issue is a rare six quartos dated 1848. For this date, varieties exist in the flowers in the wreath: this example has seven petalled flowers, others have five petals.
Recorded mintage: unknown. The variety with five petals is scarce, the variety with seven petals is common.
Specification: copper, 12.79-14.71 g, 31-33 mm diameter, the first specimen Ø32 mm, 14.37 g, 12h axis.
