This specimen is an issue of the Zacatecas mint, which was opened by the royalists in 1810 and operated by them until 1821, when it was taken over by the Iturbide regime. One reales of the "imaginary" bust type were struck there 1813-20 and the "standard" bust bust type was struck there 1820-22. Zacatecas was the most prolific branch mint during the War of Independence due to its proximity to the silver mining districts. The early issues are rare but half, one, two and eight reales of 1818-22 are very common. Zacatecas commenced striking Mexican republican types in 1825 and continued until 1905. Gold issues began in 1858.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, .903 silver, .098 troy oz ASW.
