Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1191

This specimen was lot 1191 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €650 (about US$901 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, ZWOLLE, Stad, AR dukaton (zilveren rijder), 1659. Vz/ Ridder te paard r. boven stadswapen. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. Op een brede muntplaat. (Netherlands, city of Zwolle, silver ducaton of 1659. Obverse: mounted knight charges right over the city arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality supported by two lions. Struck on a tight planchet, Very Fine.)"

This type, worth sixty stuivers, is listed for 1660-77, 1682 and 1686. This appears to be a scarce unlisted date. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.
