Friesland 1659 ducaton Dav-4926
The first specimen was lot 1284 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €420 (about US$610 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, FRIESLAND, Provincie, AR dukaton (zilveren rijder), 1659, Droit: Ridder te paard radié boven provinciewapen. Revers: Gekroond Generaliteitswapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. Zeldzaam. Bijgegraveerd op vz. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Friesland, silver ducaton of 1659. Obverse: armored, mounted knight charges of the provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality supported by two lions. Scarce, obverse tooled, very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 658 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,148 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "piedfort dukaton of zilveren rijder. 1659. Op 1½ zwaarte. Ruiter naar rechts boven ongekroond provinciewapentje MO: NO: ARG: PRO: CON – FOE: BELG: FRI• leeuwtje•. Kz. generaliteitswapen zonder cartouche, jaartal boven de kroon. Binnencirkels op voor- en keerzijde en met gladde rand. delm. 1033b; piedfort op anderhalf gewicht. aR 48.57 g. RRRR. Zeer fraai. uit veiling Schulman 237 van 18 maart 1963, no. 459 -> collectie g.h. crone -> veiling 223 van 23 maart 1953, no. 582. dit is het enige ooit bij Schulman B.V. sedert 1880 voorgekomen exemplar." This type, worth sixty stuivers, is listed for 1659-68. The second specimen is not a single ducaton (Dav-4926) nor a double ducaton (Dav-4925) but a 1½ ducaton, obviously a mint sport. Other silver coins included two, six, seven, ten, fourteen, twenty-eight and thirty stuiver pieces.
