Zwolle 1656 2 ducats Fr-212
This specimen was lot 32727 in Heritage Sale 3115 (Chicago, May 2024), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Zwolle. Provincial gold 2 Ducat 1656 AU53 PCGS. First we have handled from this elusive issue, here presenting original surfaces with ample remaining detail. The sole straight-graded piece recorded by PCGS." Zwolle was a town in Overijssel that somehow obtain the mint right from the emporer and used it to strike underweight and under fineness coins, much to the annoyance of the States General, which took a decades long campaign to close all the municipal mints. While single ducats (Fr-213) appear occasionally, the double ducats are rare; the SCWC lists only the dates 1655-56 and 1662.
