Zeeland 1659 2 ducats Fr-306
This specimen was lot 25202 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "Zeeland. Gold 2 Ducat 1659, AU53 NGC. The cataloguer sees this as a full Mint State and choice coin, the luster strong, flan full and round, strike excellent. The texture of the gold is entirely as from the mint, charming to those with knowledge who bother to look closely. A beautiful example of this classic trade coin." Zeeland, along with several other Dutch provinces, issued gold ducats from the sixteenth century until the termination of the United Provinces by Napoleon in the 1790's.
